We often tease a business colleague, raised in East Texas, about his strong 
accent.  One day he confided that a college English professor told him, "I'll 
pass you on one condition."

"What's that?" he asked.

She replied, "You must promise never to leave the state of Texas!"

Our friend Alex emigrated from Russia to the United States and was looking 
for a job in engineering.  During one interview the personnel director 
remarked how difficult it was to pronounce typically long Russian names.  
"What?" Alex said.  "And you think Massachusetts is easy?"

I was paying for gas at a convenience store in north Georgia when I noticed 
that the clerk looked exhausted.  "Rough day?" I asked.

"Nothing's been going right," she said.  "And to top it off, some guy just 
came in asking directions, and he didn't speak a word of English." 

"What nationality was he?" I asked.

"Oh," she replied, "I think he was British."
